madama butterfly

emily mitarai and tim koide are the awesomest friends ever. they gave us the BEST wedding gift: tickets to the metropolitan opera.

to say the least, it was AMAZING. the whole opera was very dramatic and beautiful, but the opening scene was my favorite. it looked something like this:

the whole set was beautiful; it was very simple and the back screen would change colors depending on the time of day and/or to match the mood in the scene. sliding rice paper walls would change the setting from inside the house to outside the house, and petals dropping or floating on strings from above gave the garden a romantic feel. the music was beautiful--it was more soothing and melodic than other operas i have seen, and the aria butterfly sang as she was waiting for her husband to return was enchanting.

overall, it was a wonderful night, and to emily and tim, thank you thank you thank you!

our new blog.

since we are going to be leaving brooklyn in just a couple of months, we wanted to document some of the fun things we've been able to do here before we leave. so for our first blog, we'll just kind of play catch up.

so, here you go. our new york state of mind:

storm king.

not terrorism. just a really cold ferry ride by the statue of liberty.

a rockefeller christmas.

the arts.

the best moment ever.

the us open.

and seeing new york from a whole different view.

that was just a sneak peak of a few of the awesome things we've done together . . . stay tuned for more goings-on in brooklyn, usa!
