clara's birth story

almost a week later, i am finally getting around to putting up a post and some pics about my baby girl's delivery. and really, i'm only able to do this because both of my kids (weird that i have kids-plural!) are sleeping at the same time and i'm feeling well enough to sit up and do this!

i thought i'd present clara's birth story in a manner like this:

total time being pregnant: 39 weeks and 3 days
total number of vomits: innumerable (including one final one right after the birth!)
total number of doctors prior to birth: 1
total weight gained: i am not telling, so don't ask.
total number of WEEKS of pre labor: 6 and a half. and a full 4 days of contractions at 10 minutes apart!
total number of hours pre-epidural: 4 (but felt much longer . . . )
total hours of active labor prior to water breaking: 4 hours and 45 minutes
total number of pushes/contractions until clara came out: 4
total hours of entire labor: just under 8

as you can see, clara's birth was much different from william's! everything about this labor and delivery threw me for a curve ball! besides not having to push too long. my doctor told me i was a champ when it came to pushing :) and yes, i just bragged about my pushing abilities!

so, now that you've got the details, i'll give you the story.

after weeks of pre-labor and 2 false labors, i finally went in at 8:30am on April 10, 2012 to be induced. who would've thought that after weeks of contractions that i would have to be induced! i got to the hospital and was still only dilated to a 2. so, at 9:00am, the nurses started me on pitocin.

i knew that induced labors tended to take longer than naturally going into labor, so i was hesitant to get an epidural too early. i didn't want to have all of that anesthesia in me for hours and hours. so, despite the fact that my contractions were quite painful, i held off as long as i could. which was until 1:00pm. then my anesthesiologist came in and instead of getting right down to business and giving me my drugs, he gave us all a lesson in epidurals and all kinds of things i didn't really care about at the time! but he was nice, and finally shot me up so that my pain and "pressure" was more bearable.

at 1:45pm, my doctor came in and broke my water. i was still only dilated to 4cm when he did this. then my contractions really started picking up. a little too much, in fact, so that baby clara wasn't happy. her heart rate would drop with each contraction, and so a couple hours later the nurses started pumping her with more fluids and turned off my pitocin per the doctor's orders. after that, clara was much happier.

then, the "pressure", as my anesthesiologist would call it, really amped up. i think i'd call it pain, but hey, he's never had a baby, so let's go with his words! anyway, i was facetiming (the apple version of Skype) with peter during this whole time, and he told me i was ready to have the baby. he remembered that last time with will, all of a sudden i felt the same continuous "pressure" through my epidural and when checked, it was time for me to start pushing. i thought he might be right, so i called the nurse in, and lo and behold, i was dilated to a 9 and just about ready to go.

so, my nurse called my doctor and told him to get his booty to the hospital. it was about 4:15pm, and he was scheduled to be to the hospital around 4:30pm. ten minutes later he rolled in, saw that i was fully dilated and rushed off to change into scrubs. meanwhile the nurse got everything ready to go, the iPad with peter anxiously watching was set up on the table by my feet (yep, he watched the whole thing from that angle), and my team got ready.

my dream team: my mom, sister, elise, and sister-in-law, jill. with my husband being gone, these three were the next best support and they were awesome.

my mom and elise each took one of my legs. btw, elise wasn't entirely prepared for that one. the nurse was needing to do other things, so i assigned elise my right leg and she stepped up like a pro. although i was worried she was internally freaking out. for the first little while she just looked at my face, but then when clara made her grand entrance, elise couldn't help but watch the miracle take place. my mom said that her face showed utter amazement and horror at the same time. pretty awesome. i wish i would have noticed her face, but i was focused on other things at the time.

anyway, i started pushing, and it only took 4 contractions, and at 4:49pm, clara popped on out! elise had the honor of cutting the umbilical cord (yes, elise received an entire education that day!) and then the doctor held baby clara up to the iPad for peter to get a good first look at our baby girl.

i had many mixed emotions when clara was born. i was relieved, soooo happy, and so sad at the same time. sad that my husband was on the other side of the world when one of our babies was born. but, that being said, under the circumstances, i think we were able to make the best of it. the timing worked out perfectly so that peter was present (via FaceTime) the entire labor and delivery. the wifi never went out once, and he was able to witness the birth as much as was possible. still, i got a little teary eyed holding my baby girl and looking at my husband through the iPad.

the next morning my mother-in-law brought william to the hospital to meet his brand new baby sister. it was so sweet to see his excitement. he immediately wanted to hold her and has been nothing but kind and happy to help since she's been around. in fact, he always gets very concerned whenever clara cries, and he comes running to see what's bothering her. the other day when he heard her cry, he ran into my room to see her and said to her, "don't cry, i'll keep you safe." it was the sweetest, most tender thing i've ever heard. i know he's going to be a wonderful big brother to little clara.

so, that's my little clara momoko's birth story. we are thrilled to be a family of 4, and we're anxiously awaiting daddy's arrival so that he can meet her!

Announcing Baby Clara

Sorry for the suspense... Here's a little teaser. Emily is going to post more of the eventful day in the coming days, so hang tight a little longer.

And by the way, Will loves his new sister, always wants to know what she's doing, and alternates between calling her baby clara and baby momoko... He's pretty stoked about the whole thing. This is easily my favorite picture of the week.

my little easter bunny

we had a nice easter sunday today. after looking for eggs and our baskets, we got ready for church and went outside to take some pictures. but just for fun, let's take a look at last year's easter pictures:

william looks so little in those pictures! here are the pictures that we took today:

a lot changes in a year! my baby boy looks like a little boy now!

we also went to my aunt and uncle's house for a yummy brunch and will had a fun time with my cousin's dog. here they are, just having a little heart to heart.

we hope everyone had a happy easter!

ps. no baby yet . . .

one month to go

i'm excited for this. just one more month.
be ready to cry.

since i cried through that whole thing, will was very concerned. he kept asking me if i was crying and why i wasn't happy. then he asked, "where's mine daddy?" i wish he could understand that we're only a month away from seeing him again . . .

but here's a video on a lighter note, even though it still might make you cry:

37.5 weeks

since i haven't really been posting pictures of my pregnancy, i thought maybe i'd share one last shot before i deliver. so . . . here i am!

sorry for the blurry picture--i took it on photo booth on my computer. and please ignore my messy craft desk behind me!

37 and a half weeks. after two false labors (one at 33 weeks and one last saturday) and many hours spent at the hospital in the middle of the night (why does it always have to happen in the middle of the night, btw???), i am still pregnant. each time i had consistent contractions for over 2 hours at 5 minutes apart, but neither time did i progress. so . . . here i am. just waiting for our baby girl to stop playing tricks on me and join the outside world! peter keeps saying that she is going to be really sarcastic and a little jokester because she keeps faking us out. i'm hoping that she will be very, very calm and relaxed and that the reason she didn't come previously is because she is so calm that she is content to stay in my belly a little longer . . . i guess we'll see whose predictions are accurate! all i do know is that my body is getting very, very tired of being pregnant, so we will welcome our baby girl as soon as she is ready!

day out with my buddy

yesterday will and i had a fun day together. we went to lunch, did some shopping, and went to the aquarium. will was such a good little boy yesterday--he only ran away from me in the store once! and after a long talk about not running away from mommy, he didn't do it again the rest of the day! i was so proud of him :)

then i got a little emotional. as we were holding hands walking through the aquarium, getting excited about the frogs, otters, penguins, sharks, and fishies, i started thinking about how my little will has been my shadow/sidekick/buddy for the last two and a half years. and it really set in that in just a couple of weeks, we'd have a new little buddy tagging along with us. it won't just be the two of us anymore! of course, that's wonderful and we can't wait, but i couldn't help feel a little bit emotional and sentimental about the whole thing. especially since peter has been gone, will and i have really been together 24/7. i think that this new baby might really rock both our worlds when she comes!

anyway. in the meantime (2 weeks . . . maybe 3? . . . maybe a week and a half?), i will enjoy my one on one time with this little rascal! and then when our sweet girl arrives, hopefully we will all adjust quickly and william will have a new little best friend :)

what we've been up to . . .

will and i have really enjoyed being back in utah. we've been able to spend time with cousins and friends, and will has been able to become reacquainted with all of his toys that he missed while we were in california. that being said . . . he really misses his grandma jenny and papa! luckily they're coming in town this weekend and he'll be able to spend lots of time with them :)

so here's a random little recap of what we've been up to the last few weeks (sorry, these are all iPhone photos, so the lighting and color are not too stellar):

will on his new stick horse. he loves galloping around the house!

he has been able to spend lots of time with his little cousin, mackay:

on saturday, we celebrated the japanese holiday, girls' day at my MIL's house. it was a lot of fun--yummy japanese food, lots of girl talk with all the cousins, and we got to dress in our kimonos. here's a picture of the traditional girls day dolls:

frandsen family home evening at bachi's house (bachi is what william calls his grandma frandsen):

and today, will and i had a fun morning at the dinosaur museum at thanksgiving point. he LOVES the science room and he had fun digging in the sand areas also. he doesn't love the all of the exhibits though . . . some of them are a little scary (like the giant shark coming out of the wall). but we had a ton of fun, just the two of us, exploring and playing with all of the hands-on activities.

and lastly, here's a glimpse of what i've been up to . . . just trying to get a few things accomplished before baby girl arrives!

i've made several receiving blankets (otherwise she'd only be wrapped in blue with all of will's old blankets!):

i made a couple of these little sleep sacks--which btw are the best invention ever for that stage when babies won't keep their blankets on! (and yes, i love that whale print! i was so excited to find it in both flannel for the blanket and fuzzy fleece for the sleep sack!)

and a car seat cover. yes, a little hippie-ish, but i thought it was cute :)

and maybe one of these days i'll finish my crochet projects and show those to you as well . . . but all in all, those are the fun things we've been doing with our time!

Mustache March

Happy March First Everybody!

Another year of mustache march is upon us and it's time for all you men reading this to start growing that upper lip hair. Mustache March is an Air Force tradition that spans back many years. A young, arrogant fighter pilot kept a mustache against all odds, shot down a bunch of planes and things, and lived to tell the tale. He believed his mustache was a lucky charm and kept him bulletproof. When he returned to garrison, he was ordered to shave it even though it was kept well trimmed within regs.

So Mustache March is celebrated across the air force to celebrate the bullet proof mustache. Many air crews will wear mustaches during the entirety of their deployment. Others of us occupy the upper lip in March in solidarity with our deployment brothers and sisters in arms, especially deployed, but at home station too.
So if you're reading this, you know someone deployed and it's time for you to start that mustache. So whether you have an important lawyering job, work in a hospital administration position, account for a swiss tech company, work in finance/securities, going to school on an island or elsewhere, or some other big fancy job/position, you can sacrifice a month of vanity in solidarity with your deployed service buddy. And when people inevitably ask why you have hideousness festering just below the nose you can remind them that we still have thousands of troops in the desert fighting the good fight. Don't be shy. You can do it. I believe in you.

Happy Mustache March! Uncle Sam wants YOU (to grow a mustache)!
